Bollywood dancing is a colorful, dynamic and highly theatrical dance style seen in Indian films. It combines classical forms of dance including traditional Indian, folk, salsa, belly-dance while also incorporating more contemporary western forms such as hip hop, jazz, and funk. Having no set rules, fitness requirement or age restrictions, Bollywood dancing is the perfect means to encourage freedom of expression.The word ‘Bollywood’ is the name given to the Indian film industry, originally deriving from ‘Bombay (now Mumbai) and ‘Hollywood’. Mumbai is the home of the Indian film industry which produces more than 1,000 films a year, attracting a much larger audience than Hollywood.Saturday, January 13th 5 – 8pm Juneau Arts & Culture Center will be a window into Bollywood dancing. We will have mehndi and bindi stations for all the dancers. Henna takes 2 to three hours to dry, dancers will be using food coloring to symbolize Henna.Mehndi: Henna is the name of a medicinal plant that has many uses, while mehndi are the leaves of the henna plant ground into paste and then used as dyes. Henna symbolizes positive spirits, love, and good luck. Henna is applied for festivities, it’s a part of getting ready for events.Bindi: The bindi is said to help control the latent energy released through the ajna chakra (third eye). The bindi helps its wearer access her inner wisdom and interpret matters in an unbiased, rational manner.We have many surprises waiting for you, mark your calendars and get your spot booked on the dance floor.
